Why it matters
Low haemoglobin is a leading threat
For people living with sickle cell disease, low haemoglobin raises the risk of stroke, organ damage and early death. Research shows that even a 1 g/dL rise in haemoglobin is associated with a 64{cd874613a064af501573428e2a9ee678c12931935bb8d153d8e6f77db9a64f3c} reduction in mortality risk.
As part of World Sickle Cell Day 2024, BASC Initiative partnered with the National Blood Service Commission (South West Zonal Office), the University College Students Association and the Nigerian Red Cross UCH detachment to hold a blood donation drive.
Need blood? Want to donate?
The 25 pints form a reserve for sickle cell patients, including BASC Initiative beneficiaries and warriors from other support organisations. Patients can access blood at a subsidised screening fee by presenting their blood group to the National Blood Service Commission.
Key figures from the day included Dr Temitope Ogunjimi, Medical Director, and our media and research directors, with support from the Alexander Brown Hall executives and special guests. All volunteers received notebooks and pens, and the first ten donors received customised T-shirts.
